hi carlos,
am a big fan of your CDA app, so am finally checking out this one, having been long time user of the similar widget for konfabulator (now Yahoo widget engine).
anyhoo, all looking good to begin with, only could you enable subfolder inclusion (don't think this happens yet) ..?
also, how does the app establish the size of the photo display (since it says 100% in the options but clearly is not) ..?
only other thing to say is that it seems relatively RAM hungry (at @ 5MB on my PC). wonder if it might be better/possible to make a version to run via AveDesk/SysStats to see if it had a lower overhead as part of this app ..?
cheers .. |

I didn't have time to add the feature yet.

The zoom considers the width and height that you can set.

No ofense but are you kidding me, right? 5MB is nothing nowadays. If Windows XP needs some system resources it can take from DeskPhoto. DeskPhoto will NOT hold the memory usage against system needs. If this app was made using .NET it'd use a lot more and even tho it won't be a problem since Windows XP, again, can handle this without any problem at all.
Anyway, optimization is always viable during the developement of a program and less memory usage and, the most important, less CPU usage will be always a goal to reach.
I don't know how old you are but I'm not young and this memory concern was common at 90's where RAM cost A LOT, we had FEW of them and we worked with Windows for Workgroups and then 95.
Today we live in a real different reality so enjoy!!

hi carlos,
subfolders is the really key thing. just sop frustrating konfabulator is so ridiculously hungry on the ram front ..?! x-)
on the subject of which, know what you mean, only my family PC is relatively old - and in any case, i'm always keen to see min RAM for apps that are generally "nice additions" etc (with the best will in the world, RAM gets so easily gobbled up by other more crucial but unfortunate bloatware . that said, for example, interesting to see the original rainlendar app only eat @ 600K or so vs the new version eating almost 5x that much. sign of the times, or developer's getting slightly lazy in the face of much higher ram levels ..? )
anyway, as for age, too old to think about it - but i certainly recall the early days (we're talking vic20, zx spectrum and the bbc 32K ..! LMAO ).
anyhoo .. as soon as you're able to add the subfolder option, we'll be rockin' ..!
cheers .. |

Just my word about RAM usage: when you see an application like Rainlendar (which is simply great) using that small RAM amount you're seeing an application doing what the system itself would do if it needs more RAM. Nothing more.
It's nice to see but it does not mean "almost" anything for system itself.
I have a 4GB RAM PC at home. DeskPhoto uses 10MB of it. Why 5MB more than in yours? Because system makes it possible. I have more so system gives more to DeskPhoto and so on. RAM usage is a system matter.
Of course we're not talking about an application with problems/bugs that uses more and more RAM, more and more CPU and never stops.
What Stardock did with their dock program? They tried to make it use as less RAM as possible. You start Task Manager and you'll see a real small RAM usage. Is it good? Of course not!! The programs needs lots of CPU in order to work fast. It's better to use RAM and let system say when the application should use less than make the dicision itself and becoming slow and CPU intensive.
RAM usage is good! Believe me!
A lot of people I know (with high end PC) like to see 90% free RAM. Why?????? God knows...
But I know what you're saying. I also have an old notebook and I can't run anything I want. But that's the price to have a dated PC. |

very interesting points .. think i may well be a little more kind in future to ram-hungry apps (altho would still love to get a decent memory upgrade LOL
cheers .. |

I think you'll be very happy with Windows Vista.
CAD (that uses similar engine as the DP one) uses sometimes less then 1.5MB of RAM. |
